Dick DeVos takes grand actions to save Grand Rapids, Michigan

Dick DeVos is, perhaps, best known throughout the country as the 2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate for the state of Michigan. Although DeVos would eventually lose to then-incumbent governor Jennifer Granholm, the race was extremely narrow. The close result showed that a political novice with the right message and virtually no mainstream support beyond his own pocketbook could take on the state’s Democratic establishment and give them a run for their considerable donor-provided money.

 

Although this campaign has made the name Dick DeVos synonymous with Republican politics in the minds of many Americans, the truth is that the serial entrepreneur and prolific philanthropist has dedicated only a tiny fraction of his life to politics.
