Jeremy Goldstein is a business lawyer with more than fifteen years of experience practicing law. He is a partner at Jeremy L. Goldstein & Associates, LLC and is a go-to attorney for many major corporations looking to execute large transactions or modify employee benefits. Goldstein can also help companies decide what type of stock options to offer their employees. Due to some of the risks involved, many corporations have opted not to offer their employees stock options. Some of the main concerns companies have about providing stock options is the possibility of stock values decreasing and becoming liabilities, the risk of option overhang, and the inability to pay higher salaries due to the costs related to options.
Jeremy Goldstein suggests corporations that want to provide their employees with stock options should offer knockout option benefits. A knockout option is a barrier option that employees will not have access to if the share value decreases below a certain total. Moreover, a company’s accounting costs won’t be as affected by their fluctuating stock value. Non-employee stockholders also face less uncertainty when corporations distribute knockout option benefits. Stockholders and company employees can see strong earnings when share prices increase, along with facing reduced risks if the price drops significantly.
